The offline RPGs that survive a long commute

Nothing ruins an RPG faster than a 'reconnecting' banner in the middle of a boss fight. So I've started keeping a short list of role-playing games that work completely offline, and Emberfall Chronicle sits near the top.

What matters for a commute is the ability to save and quit instantly. Trains stop, you get off, and you don't want to lose progress. Turn-based combat helps here too, because you can pause mid-decision without the game punishing you.

My advice: download the full game over wifi at home. Many of these RPGs are big, and you don't want to burn data pulling assets on the road. Once it's installed, it's yours.

I also look for games with readable menus. On a shaking train, tiny fonts are the enemy. The best offline RPGs design around that.
